What is counselling?

Counselling is a process that facilitates both the space and opportunity to explore any difficulties and issues that life inevitably throws up from time to time. It does not provide answers or advice but facilitates the client finding their own answers and in turn will empower them to gain more direction in their lives.

What will counselling do for me?

When a problem arises it isn’t always possible to talk it through with family or friends’, working together with a counsellor gives an opportunity to look at problems in a confidential setting with a person trained to listen in a non-directive way. It enables exploration of feelings, thoughts and behaviour. Short-term work can help with specific problems while more open ended work can allow a deeper understanding of ourselves and an opportunity for personal growth.

How long will it take?

The length of counselling is always client led, you will know yourself when you feel ready to finish. It is important to understand that as counselling may bring up many different emotions it is necessary to work towards a planned ending rather than finish abruptly.

What do I need to know about my counsellor?

You should be satisfied that the counsellor you choose is qualified and experienced and that it is clear what they offer. The BACP website (see links) offers helpful information on this.

Can I be sure of confidentiality?

Everything discussed between client and counsellor in sessions is strictly confidential. However, it must be pointed out that in order to monitor work all counsellors and psychotherapists are required to regularly discuss client work with a more experienced therapist, at these times no identifying information about any client is divulged.
